Yesterday I went to the Portland Museum of Art to see the Wyeth exhibit this month which was wonderful!
Wyeth, known to employ his gift for pictoral narrative to create paintings that resonated with deeper meaning, was surely successful in this image portraying Maine fishermen as mythic figures and symbolized, through their labors, a theme of sustenance.

Coopers or barrelmakers, were important in the rural Maine economy of a hundred years ago when commercial trade and shipping provided many jobs. Sitting on a row of barrels, these barrelmakers hold the tools of their trade and sported real clothes, a Veteran’s Day poppy, and a matchbook in a pocket.
