Earlier this week, my good friend Steve and I decided to take a road trip and decided to head out to Casco Bay and Chebeague Island.  It was a trip that needed to be taken.  It forced us to slow down a bit and simply relax and enjoy the day and location.  After a short ferry ride from Cousins Island we arrived on Chebeague.

Chebeague Island, Casco Bay

It reminded me much of Monhegan Island, not so much for it’s beauty, but for the time, as it felt had stood still.  After poking around a bit, and checking out the Chebeague Island Inn, we grabbed two bikes ( neither of us had been on one in many a moon) and biked down to Hamilton Beach overlooking Casco Bay and Hamilton Sound.  What a relaxing location.. with a gentle sea breeze and spectaculiar views.  We were there for hours, gabbing up a storm, sharing thoughts an ideas and really good conversation.  I really hated to leave, and then of course we were faced with the challenge of riding those bikes back up the hill  to the ferry landing!

If you are ever in our neck of the woods..  DO visit Casco Bay and all of it’s lovely islands to visit.. they are all well worth the trip!

My favorite time at the beach is very early morning, like when the sun is just coming up.  The crowds are a couple of hours away and the beach is generally empty.  The only ones around are a few runners, some early walkers like myself,  the sanderlings, and the gulls.  Oh, and if you’re lucky, the guy driving beach zamboni.  If you’ve ever been to a hockey game, you know that they come out between periods to clean things up.  And our beach zamboni guy is no different.. he simply sweeps up any seaweed that has rolled in with the previous tide, or surely after one of our storms, keeping the beach impeccable for our gazillion visitors.

Morning Strolls

So, when the first folks arrive to claim their piece of sandy real estate, they can be confident that all of yesterday’s bumps and grooves are gone, and it’s once again a pristeen beach.  If some kid dug a hole in the sand that’s 3 feet deep, well that’ll be gone, too.  Too bad kiddo.. but hey, it’ll give you something to keep you out of trouble today while on the beach..re-building!

And some mornings..if I’m feeling really lazy and make it a short walk..I’ll climb up onto the lifeguard stand and simply watch the waves roll in.

Then tomorrow morning we can do it all again.  Me, the runners, the seagulls, and the zamboni guy.

With love from Grammy

He  takes our loved ones from us,  We know not the reasons why.  We can only comprehend the sorrow in our hearts,  From the moment their souls bless the sky.  He picks them like flowers in a field.  Some prepared for his presence,  Some without a chance to yield.  It doesn’t matter if the ones he chose, are someone’s brothers, sons or grandsons.  But somehow when reminiscing,  after all the tears are cried,  We remember all the reasons we loved them, and know with all our hearts,  why God himself would want them by his side.

My dear Andrew…..  May God bless you,  and keep you safe always.   With love from Grammy.
