This morning there was a young seal pup resting on the sand, which caused concern for many folks. I just love the harbor seals and porpoise that take up residence in our waters. I’m especially drawn to the pups.. they are just so sweet, and so curious and friendly… We’ve even had them hop up onto the kayaks when we’re out paddling about.. they know I bring them cut up mackerel for a treat.
But they need to be enjoyed from a distance when they settle on the beach or nearby rocks for a nap.
Here are a few tips from Marine Mammals of Maine for this very normal activity by the seals.
Stay at least 150 feet away! Seals that are continually approached, do not get a chance to rest. Returning an exhausted animal to the ocean could be fatal. Continued disturbance of the mother/ pup pairs could lead to the abandonment and subsequent mortality of the pup.
Do not touch the animal. All Maine mammals are protected by the Maine Mammal Protection Act. It’s illegal to touch, disturb or harass these animals. Violators can be fined or arrested.
Do not pour water on a seal, cover it, or attempt to move it back into the water – It is normal for a seal to come ashore to rest and be dry. Seals are semi- aquatic animals, meaning they naturally only spend part of their time in the water. They do not need to be wet.
Remember that seals and seal pups rest onshore. Do not disturb them. It’s the law!
